Marjory G. Lichtenberg, 103, Monroe, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at Aster Assisted Living in Monroe.
She was born Feb. 8, 1921, to Frank and Mary Frances (Bell) Greer in Mercer County, Illinois. She was raised on the family farm outside Aledo, Illinois, where she graduated high school in 1939. She attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, and graduated in 1943 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics.
After graduation, Marjory worked at several jobs, including as an editor who wrote a column covering new appliances for Better Homes & Gardens magazine; a spokesperson for the egg industry; and as a demonstrator of electric ranges for Commonwealth Edison. She eventually settled into her main career as a home economist and food stylist. She worked in downtown Chicago, testing recipes and preparing food to be photographed for use in national advertising.
Marjory married Edward H. Lichtenberg on Sept. 21, 1957. They lived in the north side of Chicago until buying a home in Skokie, Illinois in the early 1960s. They remained at that home for more than 40 years before moving to Beaver Dam and then Monroe to be close to family.
Marjory enjoyed cooking, yarn crafts, gardening, traveling and visiting with family. She and her husband had a summer home at Camp Lake, where they liked swimming, water skiing, sailing and card games with family and friends. Marjory and her husband frequently visited family in Madison, where they enjoyed cross country skiing, sledding and ice skating.
Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Wiggs, Fort Wayne, Indiana; nieces Teri Anderson, Spencerville, Indiana, Deborah (Kearns) Black, Auburn, Indiana, Donise Crum, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mary Jane (John) Grenzow, Monroe, and Susan (Patrick) Stewart, Rockford, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and David Bestor; and nephews J. Andrew Bestor and Lindsey Bestor.
The family thanks St. Croix Hospice and the staff at Aster for the care Marjory received in her final days.
She will be buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Madison.
