Marilyn J. Ekena, age 82, of Monroe passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at SSM Health- Monroe Hospital. She was born the daughter of Kenneth and Mary (Iher) Sanderson on January 31, 1941 in Moline, IL. She was a graduate of Moline High School, and later earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Art Therapy from Western Illinois University. Marilyn was united in marriage to Charles “Chuck” Ekena on August 24, 1963 in Moline, IL.

Marilyn was an art teacher for the Monroe School District for over 10 years; teaching at all of the grade schools and the junior high. She was also a proud homemaker and wife, she meticulously took care of her home, where nothing was out of place. Marilyn also enjoyed taking care of her family with a kind heart and a helpful nature. She was a woman of many talents but will be most remembered for her artistic abilities.  

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Chuck; children, Kristin Leslie and Thomas Ekena; 6 grandchildren; brothers, Ronald (Cheryl) Sanderson and Bill (Ella) Sanderson; and brother-in-law, Rolland (Ardenne) Ekena. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 11AM on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor John Tabaka officiating. Burial will follow service in Greenwood Cemetery.
