Marieta L. Smith
Marieta L. Smith

Marieta L. Smith, age 81, passed away on Thursday July 6, 2023 after a long battle with cancer, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, with her husband by her side.  She was born in Iowa, spent younger years in Wyoming before coming to Wisconsin.  She married Myron Smith January 13, 1986 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.  She was retired and enjoying retirement with her husband of 37 years, and staying very active.  She enjoyed nature, boating, fishing, tennis, bird watching/migration, yard work, taking long leisurely walks with her husband and recipe collecting and trying new recipes for her family.  She loved to travel and see so many beautiful parts of the US that she hadn’t seen since a teenager, especially enjoyed traveling the western states and National Parks with her husband by her side.  Then of course she was an avid Green Bay Packer and Milwaukee Brewer fan.  We will all miss the excitement she shared while watching the games at home, Lambeau Field, and Miller Park.  Her greatest interest was medical technology and research.  She also enjoyed Horses and NASCAR/Motorcycle Races.

She was a self-employed long-haul truck driver for approximately 20 years then employed by Moore Business Forms (now RR Donnelly) in Monroe for 30 years, retired and went to Blackhawk Technical College, where she received her associates degree in the medical secretary program.  She worked part time while going to college at Charlton Group.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hattie and Eben Phelps, Manchester, Iowa; one daughter, Cathy Nelson, Amherst, WI; one granddaughter, Nicole Kieper, Las Vegas, NV; two brothers; eight sisters; many aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

She is survived by her husband Myron Smith, Monroe, WI; two daughters, Colinda Shellenberger Kram, (Michael) Winnebago, IL and Cindy Kieper, (Bill) Madison, WI; one son, Lloyd Shellenberger, Jamestown, WI; one step-son, Roger Smith, Tallahassee, FL; sister, Linda Chambers, Manchester, IA; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; along with special friends Tim and Marla Petit, Monroe, WI.

A Celebration of Marieta’s Life will be held at a later date.  Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family.  Condolences may be sent to the family at: shriner111.com.
