Margie A. Schilt

Margie A. Schilt, age 95 of Monroe, died Friday, January 20, 2023 at SSM Health Hospital, Monroe. She was born on July 3, 1927, the youngest of four children to John and Rosa (Pfister) Wuethrich. Margie grew up on the family farm and began country school at the age of 4 to keep up with her siblings. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1944 at the age of 16. After graduating, Margie worked at the First National Bank in Monroe and Beloit.

Margie’s love of music began at age 12. Her two brothers had formed a band and needed a string bass player, so they arranged for her to get one for Christmas. Margie soon joined their band, and later met her husband Hollis Schilt when the band hired him as trumpet player. They married on August 29, 1948 at St. John’s United Church of Christ and celebrated 51 years before his passing. They were lifelong members of St. John’s Church.

Margie and Hollis had four children. She was a homemaker and took pride in taking care of her children and being there for them. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, camping with family, and family holiday get-togethers.  After the children were raised, Margie worked a number of years for the Abe Lincoln Elementary School as playground supervisor. She also began playing her bass again with the Moo Grass, Last Gasp, and Twilighters entertaining at senior citizen centers, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities until the age of 89.

Margie is survived by her children, Sharon (Larry) Beer of Fennimore, WI; Randall (Karen) Schilt of Hortonville, WI; and Brian Schilt of Green Bay, WI; 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Susan, 2 brothers and 1 sister.
