Kenneth A. Schmid, age 95, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2019. He was born on May 4, 1924, in Monroe, the son of Alvin and Grace (Chesebro) Schmid, and lived his life in and around Monroe through 2017, when he entered memory care at Brookdale Middleton Stonefield, until his passing.
Ken’s lifelong vocation was agriculture, and he loved every part of his participation with it. As a boy, his father taught him about dairy farming on their family farm north of Monroe. After graduating from Monroe High School in 1941, he and his dad purchased a dairy/hog farm north of Juda. Ken owned and operated dairy/beef/hog farms around Green County throughout his 40+ years of active farming. He cared deeply for the land and the animals he raised, treating them with the reverence he felt they deserved. He was the closest to His God in the midst of a corn field.
Ken obtained both his real estate and appraisal licenses, and spent many years selling and appraising agricultural real estate. He opened Agri-Center Realty in Monroe, and poured all of his years of experience into helping many people find the right farm. He also spent many years in the farm auction business. Through all of his varied roles in the world of agriculture, he touched many farms and lives around Green County, southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. He met so many wonderful people, some of whom became the best of friends, and always loved telling the stories of those experiences.
Ken’s lifelong love was Helen. They met at a Turner Hall dance and married on September 13, 1945. They had 5 children, and their family has grown to include 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. They worked hard together to provide a wonderful life for their family. They loved to travel, and visited lots of places together, including Europe, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, many locations in the US, including 2 trips to Alaska. Florida was their winter home for many years. Their 74 years together were filled with a deep and abiding love, which they shared generously with family and a long list of lasting friendships.
Ken is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Beverly, Conrad (Nancy), Paul (Linda), and Peg (Erwin Bauer) Lyon; grandchildren, Jennifer Dudzik, Ronald, Eric and Brandon; 5 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald in Vietnam; infant daughter, Theresa; son-in-law, Michael Lyon; sisters, Lola, Elsie Hill, Dorothy Kiechler and Phyllis Broussard; parents-in-law, Arthur and Celeste McAdams.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at Victor’s Catholic Church.
The family is sincerely grateful for the care and kindness given to Ken by the staff of Brookdale Middleton Stonefield and Agrace Hospice.
