John Miles Jacobs, age 76, of Monroe passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at SSM Health Monroe Hospital. He was born the son of Lee and Alyce (Cunningham) Jacobs on June 22, 1949 in Monroe.
John attended Monroe High School where he met his future wife, Mary Mallory. After graduation in 1968 and their marriage in 1969, John was drafted in to the U.S. Navy, operating as a Gunners Mate on the USS Denver LPD-9 during the Vietnam War. After returning from the war, John worked at Moore Business Forms until he and Mary decided to move to northern Idaho. They spent 20 years being near their grandchildren and watching them grow into adulthood. In 2016 they returned to Monroe, John continued to enjoy his retirement by doing woodworking with his specialty in unique birdhouses, many of which he gave to family, friends, and donated to many organizations for benefits and raffle prizes. If you knew his work, you would know right away when you some one of his birdhouses, he had a flair for uniqueness that was unmatched. Speaking of unique, that is a perfect word to describe John; he was always coming up with new ideas on everything he made and would make special items for his family and the many friends he acquired over the years. He will be remembered for his quick wit, his kindness, and for being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; daughter, Brenda Jacobs (Dale Carolan); son, Jason Jacobs; grandchildren, Alexis Jacobs and Dylan Jacobs; and great-grandchildren, Stephen Johnson, Jr., and Jessa Johnson; and his nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, parents, brother, Dan; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
John’s family would like to express their thankfulness to the staff at SSM Health Monroe Hospital for the excellent care they gave John over the past 10 years. Their care and compassion were above and beyond; John was so thankful to have such a great team taking care of him, especially the past few months.
As John said before he passed, “I’ve had a good run” and yes, he did, we only wish it could have been longer. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him near and far.
Per John’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded, no services will be held. Condolences may be sent to the family at: shgdfuneralhome.net.
