Jane Catherine Ditter, age 90, of Monroe passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, in Monroe, Wisconsin. She was born to Joseph and Mary (Knaus) Schmitz on Nov. 20, 1928 in Taycheedah, Wisconsin. Jane was united in marriage with Alvin Ditter on June 16, 1949.

Jane’s life was one of love and strength. She was the eighth child of 11 born during the Great Depression. Her mother died when she was seven so her eldest sister, Edna, became the mother of the family. Mom said they never were hungry because of living on a farm and having a big garden. She did remember cutting the toes out of her leather shoes when they became too tight. After graduating from St. Mary’s Springs Academy, Jane, then 17 moved to Fond du Lac for work. After marriage, she and Al moved to Madison in 1953 with two small children. She acknowledged how challenging that was. Mom worked hard her whole life. She showed us her love by cooking, canning, sewing our clothes, and caring for her family. Her greatest joy was having everyone home for a family dinner. Jane also enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and playing cards. She thoroughly enjoyed playing Sheepshead and Euchre with family and friends.

Her determination was evident in her battle with Alzheimer ’s Disease. She faced all challenges with grace and dignity.

She is survived by her devoted children, Mary (Robert-deceased) Schara, David (Susan) Ditter, and John (Cindy) Ditter; her grandchildren, Amy, Kim, Kate, Beth, Mitchell, and Jaclyn; and five great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her many loving relatives and friends. Her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 2015.

She was loved dearly and will be missed by all who knew her.

Family Graveside Services will be held next spring at St. Peter’s Church in St. Peter, Wisconsin. Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family. Condolences may be sent to the family at shriner111.com
