Helen M. Locher, age 91, of Monroe, died with her family by her side on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Graceland Manor. Helen was born on March 30, 1932 in Monroe, the daughter of Ernest and Margaret (Meyer) Locher. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1950 and earned a Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s degree in Kindergarten Primary from U.W. Whitewater. Helen taught at Cooper Elementary in Burlington, WI for 40 years before retiring and moving back to Monroe to be near family. She was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ where she sang in the choir. Her love of music was evident as she was a member of the Sweet Adelines (37 years) and Monroe Swiss Singers (20 years). She was also a member of the Green County Historical Society, Green County Forestry Center and volunteered at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center. Helen was an avid Wisconsin Badger football fan. She loved to travel, visiting all 50 states, Switzerland, Germany, and her favorite destination, Australia and New Zealand.
She is survived by two nieces and a nephew, Susan Smith (Brett Priebe), Tom (Patricia) Vogel, and Jan Fuchs. She is further survived by three great- nieces, one great- nephew, seven great great- nieces, six great great- nephews, and one great great great- nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dorothy (Arley) Vogel; and a great-niece, Jessica Fuchs.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Monroe, with Rev. Todd Hackman officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Memorials are suggested in Helen’s name to St. John’s Church or Green County Historical Cheesemaking Center. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
