Helen M. Lehr, age 103, of Monroe, died Sunday, December 22, 2024 at Monroe SSM Hospice Home. Helen was born on August 24, 1921 in Cambria, WI, the daughter of Otto and Bertha (Nussbaumer) Munz. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1939 and was united in marriage to Ernest Lehr on October 18, 1942. Helen and Ernest operated the Ridge Cheese Factory in rural Monroe before purchasing the Union Hill Cheese Factory in Spring Grove Township.
Helen was a long time member of Monroe Moose Lodge, enjoyed playing cards, trips to the casino, cooking, gardening, and was active in bowling leagues well into her 80’s. Above all, Helen loved spending time with her family. She has been a resident of Aster Assisted Living for the past five years.
Helen is survived by three children, Gary (Norma) Lehr of Orfordville, Karen Zimmerman, and Donna Newman, both of Juda; eight grandchildren, Jeff Lehr, Brian (Sharon) Lehr, Kim (Wade) Boegli, Mark Zimmerman, Dawn Golackson, Traci (Nic Hitchins) Newman, Melissa (Brandon) Kilgore, Robert (Kim) Newman; eight great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren with one on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest; sons-in-law, Chet Newman and Bradley Zimmerman; three sisters and three brothers.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Monroe Moose Lodge. A memorial fund will be established in Helen’s name. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family. Condolences may be shared at www.newcomerfuneralhome.net
