New Glarus, WI

Hans Alois Lenzlinger, beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in New Glarus, Wisconsin surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. He was born on December 17, 1947, in St. Gallen, Switzerland to Alois & Rosa (Bissig) Lenzlinger. Hans grew up in the family-run Hotel/Pension Alpina in Unterwasser, SG, where he spent much of his youth skiing, eventually becoming a ski instructor. At the age of 16, he began his lifelong culinary journey through an apprenticeship that would shape his career and passion.

In 1969 Hans immigrated to the United States, embracing a new life filled with opportunity and hard work. He became a U.S. citizen in 1976, the same year he married Vicky (Cunneen).  They purchased the historic New Glarus Hotel in 1975. Together, they built a legacy rooted in hospitality and community. They expanded their vision in 1980 by building the Chalet Landhaus with partners, a landmark establishment that he continued to operate with his daughter, Briana. Bringing his passion for skiing and his fond memories of his home of Switzerland, he, along with partners, re-opened Tyrol Ski Basin in Mt. Horeb. Hans was also instrumental in bringing the Swiss Center of North America to New Glarus, WI.  After decades of service and culinary excellence, he sold the New Glarus Hotel in 2015, leaving behind a tradition of warmth and welcome that touched countless lives.

Hans is survived by his children, daughter Andrea Lenzlinger (Kevin Van Kammen), son Michael Lenzlinger (Sarah Baumgartner), daughter Briana Lenzlinger (Ross Cohen); his brother, Peter Lenzlinger (Myriam Lenzlinger); and his grandchildren, Jack, Izzy, Maggie & Levi, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews (in both Switzerland and the US). Hans and Vicky divorced in 2006 but remained close friends until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marie Therese Vozeh.

Hans was known for his deep love of family, friends, and faith. His generous spirit and culinary talent made everyone feel at home, and his meals were a reflection of the love he poured into every aspect of his life.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
