Gary “Boots” Butenhoff passed away on Sunday, August 10th at Pleasant View Nursing Home after a valiant battle to recover from a severe stroke he suffered in December of 2024. 

“Boots” was born in Monroe, WI to M. Harrison (Boots) and Marian (Cotherman)Butenhoff on April 16, 1950.  He graduated from Monroe High School in 1968, and after graduation enlisted in the National Guard and served 9 years with the 1158th transportation unit in Monroe, Wi.  He achieved the rank of E5, and was the Sergeant at Arms, and transported tanks and equipment.  He worked at Martins Sporting Goods store for several years before branching out into his own business at B & M Builders with his brother-in-law, Steve. He continued to work in construction and landscaping his entire life, right up until the day before his stroke.

Gary shared his love of the outdoors, hunting and shooting with his two sons Brian and Brandon who loved spending time with their dad learning how to hunt and be great sportsmen. Gary was an excellent trap shooter, and in 1977, Gary, his dad, brother-in-law, and two friends competed at the State of Wisconsin Trap Shoot where they won the Class A division.  “Boots” loved spending time with his family and friends and was always willing to extend a helping hand to anyone in need.  Gary enjoyed the time he spent with his daughter, Meg in the “horse world”.  He hauled her horses to many shows and watched her compete and even did some shows with his own horse, Abner too.

Gary (Boots) is survived by his sons, Brian (Jessica) Butenhoff and Brandon (Amity) Butenhoff, and daughter, Meg Butenhoff.  Granddaughters, Skylar and Hailey and his sister, Cathy (Steve) Maurer, and his nephew, Mike (Rory) Maurer and niece Lisa (Dan) Buol and cousin, Kim Reed.  He was preceded in death by his parents M. Harrison (Boots) and Marian (Cotherman) Butenhoff, uncles: John Cotherman and Naaman Bechtolt, and his aunt, Frances Bechtolt.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home, 109 Greenway Cross, Belleville, WI, with Fr. Chahm Gahng officiating.  Burial with military honors will be in the Dutch Hollow Cemetery, rural Monroe, WI. 

A visitation will precede the funeral service from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home in Belleville. 

The family would like to thank the staff at Pleasant View for the wonderful care they gave our loved one during his stay there and, also to SSM Hospice for the additional care he received during his final days.
