Charles (Chuck) Robert Blum, 92, of Freeport IL passed away on May 8, 2024.  He was born February 14, 1932 in South Wayne, WI to parents Martin and Clara (Christian) Blum who emigrated from Switzerland.  Following graduation from Monroe High School in 1949, he volunteered to join the United States Marine Corps.  He served in Europe before deployment to Korea from 1950-1954.  Charles was wounded in combat four times and awarded numerous decorations, including two Purple Hearts.  Once discharged, he attended DeVry University, Chicago, where he studied TV and radio mechanics, then worked 37 years at Micro Switch/Honeywell.

 

He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara (Schulz) October 27, 1956.  They resided in Freeport, IL and raised two daughters.  After developing a passion for golf, upon retirement, he joined the grounds crew at Park Hills Golf Course.  As an active member in the local KWVA, Charles was instrumental in the planning and execution of the All Veterans Park of Stephenson County.

 

He is survived by his two daughters, Marty Blum Coughlin (Brian), Carla Blum; and grandson, Liam Martin Coughlin.  He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, John; sisters, Elsie and Betty; as well as many of his fellow USMC brothers from 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, 5th Marines Regiment, D Company.  Semper Fi.
