Carla Hartwig’s strength and stubbornness finally gave out the evening of May 8, dying of Congestive Heart Failure at SSM Health Monroe. Born and raised in Monroe, our mom never wanted to survive 80 and be a burden on us dying just short of her 87th birthday, June 6. Born and raised in Monroe, mom graduated from MHS Class of 1955. School is where she also met our father, Tom.

Life changed greatly after a stroke in July, 2021, when she needed to give up golf. Our parents played golf together every Friday for decades at the Monroe Country Club, where we children learned golf and manners.  In her later years, she greatly enjoyed golfing with her friends at Edelweiss Chalet Country Club. Entering heaven with new knees, a hip and a shoulder, broken when she fell off her new bike at 78, hopefully she still has a “hot” putter.

Mom was very active in Girl Scouts and proud to be a 50+ year member of Monroe Woman’s Club. She looked forward to working on Christmas Stocking or planting flowers on the Square every year. Mom attended her final meeting a week before she died. She greatly missed the days of the silver coffee urn and white gloves of the past, and would sadly comment on the “changing of the times.” She was recognized with several Woman’s Club state awards for her knitting projects.

After we put our father in a nursing home in 2008, we wanted to keep mom busy and started our company, 3Sisters. During the past 16 years, mom has sewn and sold over 1,000 pairs of mittens made from recycled sweaters. Our company success in part is due to her beautiful work.

Mom will be missed by many including her 5 T’s  - Teri, Monroe, Tracy (David ) Jones, Lenexa, KS, Trish(Kurt) Roman, Verona, WI, Tiffany (Kyhl) Thomson, Le Sueur, MN and Tim (Sara) Hartwig, Allen, TX. When talking to friends in her later years, she often referred to us by the state where we resided, so some may be surprised we have names.  Mom was so proud of the accomplishments of her grand-children – Lizzy Jones Jaudon, Eric Jones, Quincy and Pierson Roman, Zack and Zoe Thomson and Harper Hartwig. She is also survived by her 16-year old Shih Tzu, Lily, the best dog in the world. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Tom, parents – Edwin and Vera Dallman and brother, Phillip.

Mom loved taking car rides and seeing people in the community -  whether it was honking at Kurt for a treat at Backerei Kline or eating lunch at Baumgartner’s, where her life was once saved when Chris performed the Heimlich maneuver on her, she wanted to see people She loved baking holiday sugar cookies and taking them to friends at Astor. We would like to thank mom’s neighbors, who have been a tremendous support to her – Kathy and Bob Reffue, Carol and Jon Rufenacht, Larry Rood, Dan Krahenbuehl, Jo Hawthorne and Tom Miller.  Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of SSM Health Monroe, the New Glarus Home and grand-daughter, Quincy, a nurse at Meriter. Memorials can be made to Monroe Christmas Stocking Fund or Operation Smile (www.operationsmile.org).

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at noon 12:00 PM at Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home.  A visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home.  Condolences may be sent to the family at shriner111.com.
