Carl M. Munz

Carl M. Munz, age 96 of Monroe, died Friday, January 10, 2020 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. Carl was born on March 4, 1923 in Cambria, Wisconsin, the son of Otto and Bertha (Nussbaumer) Munz. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1942 and entered the U.S. Marine Corp in March, 1943. Carl was assigned to the 5th Pioneer Battalion of the 5th Marine Division and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. He was honorably discharged in March, 1946. He married Marian E. West on September 24, 1948 in Monroe. Carl worked for Bordens (formerly Lakeshire-Marty) and retired from the Green County Highway Department after 26 years of employment. He was a member of the V.F.W. Cecil Jones Post #2312 and American Legion Post #84. In recent years, Carl had the privilege of taking part in the Honor Flight and Vets Roll to Washington, D.C. He loved to go dancing to many different venues, gardening, playing cards, fishing, hunting, and spent many days at the Behring Senior Center.

He is survived by a daughter, Christine Gruenberg of Freeport; a son, Dusten Munz of Monroe; five grandchildren, Darrin Gruenberg, Roger Gruenberg (Karie Werren), Ryan Gruenberg, Eric Munz, and Trisha (Mark) Wahl; seven greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Helen Lehr of New Glarus, Isabelle Hudson of Stockton, IL; and a special friend, Lois Draney of Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marian, on Sept. 25, 2011; a granddaughter, Kimberly Munz; two sisters, Bertha Morton and Bernice Munz; and two brothers, Bernard and Otto Munz.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Hope Evangelical Free Church (Old Sentry Store), 2902 13th Street, Monroe. Funeral services followed by military services will be on Friday, January 17, at 11:00 A.M. at Hope Evangelical Free Church (Old Sentry Store) with Pastor Rick Haworth officiating. Lunch will follow the services at the Monroe Moose Lodge. Inurnment will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. A memorial fund will be established in Carl’s name.
