Ann Wells passed away on March 2, 2026 at SSM Health- Monroe Hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Monroe on July 2, 1950 the daughter of George and Marilyn Wells.
Growing up in Monroe, Ann was a very good athlete in an era when the opportunities for girls weren’t what they are today. She excelled at swimming and was a member of the Monroe Swim Team winning many events over the years at the outdoor pool in Recreation Park which for many years was her backyard when she lived on 16th Street. Eventually, she would become a lifeguard and help coach the swim team.
She was a big sports fan as well and began following the Monroe Cheesemakers boys’ basketball team in the early 1960’s and remembered going to football games at Recreation Park in the mid-1950s with her parents to hear the band.
She cherished her school years in Monroe and the life-long friendships she made and graduated from Monroe High School in 1968 before heading off to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The late 60s and early 70s were interesting times to be a student at Madison and she made the most of her experience there.
After earning her degree, she returned to her home town and began a long career at the Swiss Colony Data Center. It was there that she met many life-long friends and was a loyal employee for nearly 40 years.
Upon retirement Ann found a new calling and began working as a substitute teacher / SEA with special education students in the Brodhead School District. She loved her students and looked forward to the times she was able to work with them. She eventually would step aside from this role to be a caretaker for her parents and her dear friend, Sharon.
Ann was always there to help others and appreciated all of the guidance she received from her friends over the years when she faced challenging times.
She is survived by her brother, John (Diane), plus her nieces and nephews Jennifer (Martin), Elizabeth (Curt), Michael (Katie), Stephanie (John), and Austin (Bethany). She also loved her grand nephews and nieces Allison, Jameson, Wesley, Bradley, Riley, Valerie, Jeremiah, Josiah, Everly, Owen, and Colten.
She is further survived by her cousins, aunts, and uncles along with an amazing group of friends who were there for her until the very end. She was also a cat lover and always had a cat or two or three patrolling the house.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her brother Mike and his wife Valerie, and her friend Sharon Pickett.
Ann was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and the Monroe Optimist Club and Legion Auxiliary.
A private family service as well as a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later time. A memorial fund will be established in Ann’s name for the Green County Humane Society. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family. Condolences may be shared at www.newcomerfuneralhome.net
