MONROE - One of Main Street Monroe's "Zoo on the Square" animals has been vandalized and a piece of it is missing, organizers said.
Main Street Monroe Promotions Committee co-chair Kareesa Wilson said the damage to the wooden flamingos may have occurred Friday night. Wilson said she was on the Square Saturday morning when she noticed the damage.
"We were hoping nothing like this would happen," Wilson said. "These pieces are expensive; people have bought them or sponsored them."
Wilson said that the two flamingos were attached by a cable and locked by padlock to a bicycle stand outside of The Dilly Bean on 17th Avenue, on the Square's east side. Wilson said the cable had been cut and the padlock broken.
One of the flamingo figures had been broken into two - half of it is still missing.
Wilson said that Zoli Akacsos, the artist who made the animal carvings, is willing to repair anything that is damaged on the animals.
But at this time, he said he's unsure if Main Street Monroe would seek to replace the flamingos if the missing piece is not returned.
"In this particular case, we are no sure what we are going to do," Wilson said.
The damage has been reported to Monroe police.
