MONROE - The Green County Family YMCA is celebrating the success of its SilverSneaker Program, which has the highest retention and participation of members and the highest average visits per person in the southwest Wisconsin market.

The SilverSneaker Fitness Program is the nation's leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. The fitness classes are appropriate for individuals who are fit and active, as well as those who are sedentary, intimidated, unfamiliar with exercise or entering post-rehabilitation programs.

Carol Clay, YMCA fitness director and SilverSneaker senior advisor, attributes the program's success to the dedication of SilverSneaker members and YMCA staff.

"Classes are fun but challenging," Clay said, and allow members to work at their own intensity level. Benefits of the participant's effort are soon apparent. The exerciser may find they can get up from a chair or sofa without assistance, or may be able to reach a dish from a kitchen cabinet. Many have more energy during the day and sleep better at night. As a result of the exercise, the participants feel better about themselves. This all motivates them to continue. Classes also provide an opportunity to socialize.

The SilverSneaker program is available to all senior citizens with AARP Medicare, Humana Gold Choice, Humana Choice PPO, Humana Medicare and United Healthcare Group retirees insurance. The program includes a membership to the Green County YMCA, which includes use of the fitness center, pool, track and participation in SilverSneaker fitness classes.

The fitness classes also are open to YMCA members and non-members. Summer fitness classes begin Monday, June 22. Muscular Strength and Range of Motion meets from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday and Friday; Yoga Stretch meets from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, and Cardio-Circuit meets from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.
