BRODHEAD - Two write-in candidates were elected to the Brodhead school board Tuesday.
Allen Schneider and Paul Donovan defeated board president Peggy Olsen and incumbent Carol Kloepping.
Official results weren't available, according to Brodhead superintendent Charles Deery.
Deery said one township remained to be counted but it appeared certain that Schneider and Donovan would be elected.
"They are significantly ahead," Deery said, after almost all results were reported.
Schneider said he's looking forward to serving on the board.
He said the board will begin teacher negotiations soon and also needs to continue to focus on the budget and school finances. In addition, there were 146 students that applied for open enrollment to leave the district. The parents and students have until June to make a final decision about leaving Brodhead for another district. Schneider said the board will have to look at the issue this summer to determine the financial impact of open enrollment. The district loses about $6,800 in state aid for every student that enrolls out of the district.
Schneider and Donovan entered the race after the board decided to hold a second referendum to ask residents to allow the district to exceed state-mandated property tax revenue caps to pay for operating expenses.
Donovan was not available for comment Tuesday. Donovan and Schneider take office April 26.
The two campaigned to hold down spending and to provide new perspectives to financial issues.
Olsen was elected to board in 2001, and Kloepping served on the board for 16 years.
They supported Tuesday's referendum, which asked district residents to allow the district to exceed revenue caps.
