Write-in candidates needed for election

MONROE - Candidates around the county have filed their nomination papers, but in some places the number of candidates is falling a little short of openings.

All seats on the Green County Board of Supervisors are up for election this spring, and all incumbents have filed for re-election, except one. Mary Alice Hart in District 5, Monroe, is not seeking re-election and has filed non-candidacy papers. But Kate Maresch filed nomination papers for that district.

The southern portion of the City of Brodhead is thirsting for representation on the council.

The council has open seats in Wards 4, 5 and 6, but only one candidate running. Ward 6 incumbent Troy Nyman filed for re-election.

Ward 4 Alderman Steve Peterson and Ward 5 Alderman Mark Coplien have verbally indicated they will not be candidates for city council in the spring, according to City Clerk Roseann Meixelsperger. They had yet to file non-candidacy papers as of noon Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Coplien, however, has filed to run for mayor of Brodhead, taking on incumbent Mayor Doug Pinnow.

Meixelsperger said the city is considering changing to an alderman at-large election process, but aldermen will still be elected by ward for the 2014 spring election.

To fill the empty council seats, "we need people to write in" their choice of candidates, Meixelsperger said.

The Village of New Glarus is also short of a candidate for its village board. Kevin Budsberg and Joan Betz filed non-candidacy papers. Incumbent Greg Thoemke filed for re-election. Only one new candidate for the board has stepped into the election - Petra Streiff filed to fill one of the vacant spots.

The Village of Brooklyn faces the same scenario - three seats up for re-election with one incumbent and one new candidate filing nomination papers. Susan McCallum is seeking re-election. Zach Leazy is the new candidate for 2014. Steve Lust filed non-candidacy papers.

The third seat on the board has been hard to keep filled, according to Village Clerk Carol Strause. Two previous members in that seat had to resign because of relocation and a medical condition.

The Village of Belleville saw two of its incumbents file for re-election: Bonnie Wilcox and Gary Ziegler. A third trustee, Ben O'Brien had not filed as of noon Wednesday, but the village clerk office does not expect him to run for re-election. Maxine Ward filed her nomination papers as a new candidate for the board.

The village of Albany will hold its caucus Jan. 13, and the villages of Monticello and Browntown have caucuses scheduled for Jan. 21.
