MONROE - A 450-foot section of sidewalk should be finished sometime next week to fill in a gap on 6th Avenue West, which leads to Walmart, if the weather cooperates, according to the project foreman, Myron Ellingson.
Rock Solid Construction workers have been on the site for about a week, and have started installing concrete.
Jeff Voegeli Landscaping will put up a 3- to 4-foot retaining wall after the sidewalk is in, The City of Monroe will finish the project with grading and landscaping.
The cost of the work is expected to be about $15,600. Walmart Corporation donated $8,000 to the project in August.
Over the summer, several city residents, some confined to wheelchairs, brought the problem of the sidewalk gap to the attention of the Monroe Board of Public Works and Common Council.
Pedestrians coming from West 8th Street were using the street or walking in the grass until they reach the protected walkway, which the Walmart Corporation installed, spanning Wisconsin 11/81.
Wheelchair users pointed out the danger of being in the street near the ramp from Highway 11/81 and the difficulties of traveling in both the grass and snow.
