MONROE - Fitness could be as close as your next walk in the park.
New fitness equipment is now at home at Twining Park, thanks to the efforts of a Green County Leaders group. The group raised about $25,000 to install the five individual circuit stations.
"It's basically circuit training equipment," explained Amanda Hellenbrand, one of the group's 11 members. "It's awesome."
Each station includes signs with instructions on how to perform various exercises and alternatives. "Its gives you hundreds of options," she said. The signs include a scannable code so smartphone users can access video as well.
Following through on the Green County Leader's initiative to promote wellness, the group decided to focus on getting the exercise equipment installed as a way to promote physical activity for all ages and experience levels. The equipment adds "a high-value, low-upkeep enhancement to a city park," helps promote "healthy living and family fitness" and increases the appeal of the community in general, the group wrote in a letter to potential donors.
The equipment arrived Wednesday morning and was installed on a concrete pad prepared in advance. Hellenbrand estimated the installation would take five or six hours.
Green County Leaders is an educational program sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Extension Green County and the Green County Development Corporation that is designed to develop leadership skills in individuals. As part of the program, class participants work in groups to address a community issue or need through a service project. Applications are now being accepted for the next Leaders class, which begins in September. More information is available online at green.uwex.edu.
