MONROE - A Brodhead woman was charged Friday with child abuse after she allegedly slapped a toddler across the face earlier in the week.

Angela AnnMarie Kazar, 25, was charged with recklessly causing harm to a child through abuse, a Class I felony.

The abuse allegedly occurred Wednesday, when Kazar was babysitting the child. According to a police report, Kazar slapped the child when he began screaming.

Kazar said the child "got up in my face and started screaming at me for no reason, so I smacked him." She also said she had slapped the child previously for similar reasons, and that the child's mother had told her to slap her son if he screamed.

According to the report, Kazar texted her mother, saying she didn't mean to slap him as hard as she did. She said the slap had left a mark so distinctive she could make out individual fingertips.

Kazar and her mother took the child to the Brodhead police station. Although a medical examination found no fractures, there was bruising on the child's face.

Kazar was arrested for disorderly conduct in 2009 after striking a relative, but the charge was dismissed.

Kazar's mother said in a statement to the police that Kazar and the child would never be alone together again.
