Wisconsin voters will need a photo ID to vote

MONROE - In March 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for enforcement of Wisconsin's 2011 voter ID law. This requires all voters to present an acceptable photo ID at the polls in the spring primary on Feb. 16.

Being registered to vote is the most important thing. The next step to take for 2016 elections is to have an acceptable photo ID. Many voters already may have an acceptable photo ID, such as an unexpired Wisconsin driver license, U.S. passport or military ID. Individuals not having the proper photo ID can get a Wisconsin state ID card for free.

Receiving a free Wisconsin state ID card will require taking a few documents to the local Division of Motor Vehicles: Proof of name and date of birth, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate; proof of identity, like a Social Security card; proof of citizenship or legal status, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate or certificate of citizenship or naturalization; and proof of Wisconsin residency, like a utility bill, pay stub, or mortgage papers.

The DMV can help obtain a free state ID for those not having a certified birth certificate or other documents. A state ID card is not required if one has a valid, unexpired driver's license.

The DMV in Monroe is at 815 1st Ave. and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number of 608-264-7447 is an automated system for more information.

People who are indefinitely confined due to age, physical illness, infirmity or disability may make a request to vote absentee from home by filling out the Wisconsin application for absentee ballot. This can be found at the City of Monroe's website under the Elections Information tab, can be picked up at the municipal clerk's office, or a request to have one mailed can be made by calling the municipal clerk. The completed application must be received by the clerk no later than 5 p.m. on the Thursday before the election in order for an absentee ballot to be mailed.

The Aging and Disability Resource Center encourages all seniors to make sure they have a proper ID and are able to vote in the upcoming elections. For more information about photo IDs and voting, visit the Government Accountability Boards website at http://www.gab.wi.gov/voters.
