MONROE - Unemployment rates in Green and Lafayette counties were up in December compared to November, while state unemployment dropped, according to state Department of Workforce Development data released Wednesday.
Green County unemployment was up two-tenths percentage points, to 6.4 percent. Lafayette County's rate was up three-tenths percentage points to 5.7 percent. The state rate dropped one-tenth of a percentage point for the same period.
Employment numbers in December actually increased in both counties. About 160 more people were working in Green County and 116 more in Lafayette County.
But an increase in the labor force left 57 more people without work in Green County and 37 more without work in Lafayette. A total of about 1,300 people were unemployed in Green County, and about 550 people were without jobs in Lafayette county.
Forty-nine of the state's 72 counties saw their unemployment rates rise last month.
Numbers are not seasonally adjusted.
The unemployment rate in most of Wisconsin's major cities fell in December.
According to Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development data, 28 of the state's 31 largest cities saw slight decreases in the unemployment rate last month compared with November.
Caledonia saw its unemployment rise from 3.1 percent to 3.3 percent. Rates remained unchanged in West Allis and West Bend. Beloit had the highest unemployment rate in the state in December at 13 percent, down from 13.5 percent in November. Madison had the lowest unemployment rate at 4.4 percent.
