When taxes don't go according to form

MONROE - Income taxes are due tomorrow.

Most people have already filed their taxes but every year there are some who wait until the final day to send their tax checks to the government.

For anyone who hasn't organized their shoe boxes of receipts and filled out the proper forms, there is help.

Taxpayers who can't make the April 15 deadline can file for an extension; taxpayers can get the forms they need to request an extension by going to the Internal Revenue Service Web site at www.irs.gov or by calling (800) 829-1040, according to a representative of the local H&R Block office.

People who file for an extension have until Oct. 15 to complete their tax return. However, people who plan to submit their tax return by Oct. 15 should estimate how much they have to pay in taxes and send 90 percent of the estimated amount to the IRS by the April 15 filing deadline.

Interest and penalties can be charged for unpaid taxes on the unpaid balance owed to the government.

For anyone who plans to send their income tax forms in at the last minute, H&R Block recommends looking over the tax return to avoid a few last-minute mistakes such as:

• Selecting an incorrect filing status.

• Claiming ineligible dependents.

• Mixing up names and Social Security numbers of spouses.

• Forgetting to send in necessary forms.

• Making math errors.

• Not signing the return.

• Waiting too long to file electronically. High Internet traffic has prevented people from meeting the filing deadline.
