DARLINGTON - A warrant is issued for an Argyle man charged with theft in Lafayette County Circuit Court in connection to home repairs he was contracted to perform.

Charles Owen Riley, 60, faces a Class H felony count of theft of more than $10,000 in a business setting. The maximum prison sentence for a Class H felony is six years.

Investigation into the case began Dec. 15 when a Town of Gratiot woman told police she contracted Riley to do repairs and construction work on her home on Larse Road, but he failed to do the work as promised.

According to the criminal complaint, she paid Riley $4,800 for roof repairs and to clean up old materials. He re-shingled the roof but failed to remove old shingles and other discarded construction materials from the ground. She also told police she paid Riley $6,500 for siding repairs that never were done.

An arrest warrant was issued Jan. 9 for Riley. Court records show he has a criminal history in the area dating back to 1999, when he was found guilty at a jury trial of misdemeanor charges of battery to law officers or firefighters and resisting or obstructing police. In November in Iowa County, he was charged with a felony count of theft of movable property with a value greater than $10,000. That case is still pending.
