MONROE - Matt Rohloff, 27, Monroe, remembered how he felt when he saw the United States flag in basic training.
"When we would salute the flag I would get a cold chill up my spine," he said.
Rohloff, a member of the United States Naval Reserve, stood out Monday at the Memorial Day event at Greenwood Cemetery.
In his clean, white uniform he almost looked like a statue.
He was just one of many who wore their military uniform Monday. Some were young while others were older having served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam or the Gulf wars.
Rohloff spent six years on active duty and served in the Persian Gulf and in Iceland.
Like the other soldiers and veterans who gathered Monday at the cemetery, he believed Memorial Day is a special day.
"I came here to honor the men and women who died for their country," he said.
