MONROE - During November, the Monroe Art Center invites the public to view an exhibit celebrating the popular new art form that is sweeping the nation.

"Gourds: From Eclectic Montage to Inspired Simplicity" will be on display featuring three prominent Wisconsin gourd artists, Debra Ready, Barbara Rothwell, and Terri Schmit. See how these artists have applied methods of woodburning, painting, staining, dying and carving to create one-of-a-kind artworks from what's been termed "Nature's Pottery."

These artists, each with a rich and diverse impression of this medium, show that gourds are limitless in their in adaptability to any art form and hold boundless possibilities. From a humble fruit-bearing vine springs forth art in the form of bowls, vases, boxes, rainsticks, wallhangings, masks, and dolls.

The exhibit will be on display from Nov. 6 to 28. An opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 in the Monroe Arts Center Frehner Gallery. Artists from this group show will give a short Gallery Talk at 5:15 to discuss this unique art form, as well as their inspiration and techniques.

This free, informal, come-as-you-are event is for art lovers of all levels. Come stroll through the gallery on your way home from work or school and enjoy the wonderful refreshment table in a relaxed, friendly environment.

This exhibit has been made possible by Monroe Arts Center Corporate Underwriter, Swiss Colony and Season Media Underwriters, BIG Radio and Monroe Publishing. Additional support for this exhibit was provided by Michael and Shelley Muranyi.
