Vanpool seeking interested riders

MONROE/NEW GLARUS - Vanpool 1149 is seeking residents from the area to take part in the Rideshare program, which shuttles riders from Monroe to the VA/University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, with a stop in New Glarus along the way.

A state-provided van departs Monroe at approximately 5:40 a.m., with pickups in New Glarus between 5:55 and 6 a.m., and arrives at the VA/UW Hospital area at about 6:40 a.m. Drop off locations to VA/UW Hospital are on campus. The schedule and route of the van works with jobs that fall between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Those who currently take advantage of the Rideshare program and use the van to get to and from work each week came close to losing the van at the end of December.

Van 1149 started in the Monroe area a little more than two years ago. At its peak, the program had 11 riders with a monthly rate of $168. At this time, there are only five riders and there is risk of an additional increase to the rate.

In December, the van underwent reorganization of coordinator and made route changes. Van 1149 now has a new coordinator and new route that allows a later departure and earlier returns back home. The changes in route also reduced the miles traveled per day, reducing the rate based on mileage.

Many businesses have worked with its employees to accommodate the use of the vanpool. Some businesses have transit benefits for car/vanpool use.
