fatal accident

TOWN OF GRATIOT — The driver of a UTV that crashed on the Cheese Country Trail Sept. 9 died Saturday morning.

Cory A. Williams, 41, Janesville, had been in University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison after the crash on the trail near Gille Lane.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Williams was driving east on the trail around 6:15 p.m. when he lost control of his UTV and it rolled over “multiple times.”

First responders arrived on the scene to find Williams unresponsive and not breathing, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Williams was taken by Green County EMS of Darlington to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County, then by Med Flight helicopter to UW Hospital in Madison, where he died Saturday.

Williams’ passenger, Heidi N. Weber, 28, Monroe, was taken by Green County EMS to Monroe Clinic with non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol and careless operation appear to be contributing factors to the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office and the state Department of Natural Resources are investigating the crash.

According to the DNR, Williams was the 10th person to die on a UTV in the state this year. The DNR reports that 10 people have died on ATVs this year.
