MONROE - A Monroe man died early Sunday morning following a house fire around 12:30 a.m. at 2415 16th St. on Monroe's east side.

Jeffrey R. Sullivan, 37, was taken to Monroe Clinic hospital by Green County Emergency Medical Services, but died shortly after his arrival from fire-related injuries, Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said.

An autopsy was performed, but an the exact cause of death could not be determined, Kelley said, and further tests are required.

Kelley said officers responded to a 9-1-1 call around 12:30, and when officers arrived the house was engulfed with flames.

An adult female, two juvenile males and a juvenile female were found outside the house and officers were told there was a man still inside the home.

"Officers were unable to go into the residence due to heavy smoke and flames," Kelley said. "Officers went around all sides of the house, trying to find a way in or see the missing person."

Kelley said officers had to wait for firefighters, who arrived at the scene about six minutes later. They were able to enter the house, but needed a thermal imaging camera to find Sullivan in a basement room. He was alive but unconscious, Kelley said.

The other occupants in the house at the time of the fire were Sullivan's wife, Ruth R. Sullivan, 35, and their children, Julia B. Sullivan, 16, David A. Sullivan, 13, and Levi D. Sullivan, 12. Julia Sullivan sustained fire-related injuries.

Deputy Fire Chief Lane Heins told Madison radio station WIBA 1310 AM that Jeffrey Sullivan went downstairs to rescue Julia. Heins said Julia was taken to Monroe Clinic with severe burns, then Med-Flighted to UW Hospital in Madison.

Monroe Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said this morning he could not confirm Heins' remarks.

Dorothy Vogel, who lives next to the Sullivan house, remembered Jeffrey Sullivan as a "wonderful guy."

"He helped me a lot of times," she said Sunday morning as she stood on her porch and looked at the fire truck still parked in front of the house. "It's the saddest thing."

Vogel said she took care of the family's pets when they went away.

"I'll never forget it," she said of the fire.

The fire remains under investigation by police and fire officials. The State Fire Marshal was contacted to assist in the investigation, as is common, Kelley noted.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, Kelley said. The fire originated in the basement. Kelley said there were no working smoke detectors in the house.

Three firefighters sustained minor injuries during the rescue.
