ORANGEVILLE — A two-vehicle accident just outside Orangeville killed two California residents traveling together and critically injured an Illinois man midday Friday, Aug. 9.

Anna Carpenter, 41, the driver, and Lyman Carpenter, 84, her passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office reported. The Carpenters are from Manteca, California.

The other driver, 37-year-old Erik Buss, Dakota, was flown by Mercyhealth REACT helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital at Riverside in Rockford.

The crash was reported at 12:13 p.m. on Illinois 26, a half-mile north of Orangeville Road. A preliminary investigation shows Anna Carpenter was southbound when her Kia Soul crossed the centerline and hit the GMC truck Buss was driving.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation as of Monday, Aug. 12, and Buss’ condition was unknown, the sheriff’s office reported.

The highway was shut down about five hours between Winslow Road and Orangeville Road, according to Stephenson County Emergency Management.
