Unemployment rate dips in area

MONROE - Unemployment rates for May in both Green and Lafayette counties moved down to a level that neither has seen since December 2008, according to new data released Wednesday by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The rates are not seasonally adjusted.

Green County's unemployment rate has been easing off from a 20-year record high of 10 percent this March. The unemployment rate for May is 7.8 percent, down one-half point from April.

One year ago, the unemployment rate was 9.3 percent, and in May 2008 it was at 4.1 percent. Unemployment jumped from 5.7 percent in December 2008 to 8.2 percent in January 2009.

Lafayette County dropped four-tenths of a point from April to 6.0 percent last month.

Unemployment was 6.9 in May 2009 and 3.4 in May 2008. It jumped from 4.9 percent in December 2008 to 7.6 percent in January 2009.

Lafayette's 2010 labor force and employment numbers are near the average 2009 and 2008 numbers for April, May and June.
