MONROE - Two Illinois men remain jailed after making initial appearances Thursday in Green County court for burglary and theft charges in connection to a burglary May 20 at Monroe Honda.

Lawrence D. Griffin, 36, Gurnee, Ill., and Edward J. Barnstable, 40, Ingleside, Ill., are charged with burglary, a class F felony, theft of movable property, a class G felony, and theft of movable property, a class I felony. They face up to 26 years in prison and up to $60,000 in fines, if convicted.

Griffin is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 10. Barnstable is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 3. They remain jailed on $10,000 cash bonds and $40,000 signature bonds.

According to Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley, someone saw men pushing an all-terrain vehicle from Monroe Honda, down a nearby bike trail to a waiting vehicle with a trailer in the early-morning hours of May 20. The vehicle fled before officers arrived. Kelley said a description of the vehicle was sent to the Stephenson County Sheriff's Department.

Five ATVs, valued at about $40,000 were taken.

The vehicle and trailer were stopped by a Stephenson County deputy. The trailer contained ATVs matching those from Monroe, Kelley said. The two men were taken into custody.

The two men were returned to Monroe on Wednesday for their court appearances.
