ONECO — A serious accident on August 9 took two lives and shut down Ill. 26 for about three hours.
The crash happened at about 12:38 p.m., and both Stephenson County (Ill.) Sheriff’s Office and Green County (Wis.) Sheriff’s Office told drivers to steer clear of the scene, which was between Oneco Road and Winslow Road, approximately one mile south of the Wisconsin-Illinois border.
The Stephenson County Coroner’s office on Sunday confirmed the deaths of two people involved in the crash. The victims had not been identified as of press time.
On Monday, August 11, Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall announced a press conference would be held on Tuesday, August 12 in Courtroom 5 at the Stephenson County Courthouse.
The accident was being investigated by the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department.
“Sheriff Stovall will hold an in-person press conference to release details regarding the double-fatal traffic crash that occurred...in rural Orangeville,” a press release said Monday. “The press conference will provide preliminary investigative findings related to the crash, which claimed the lives of two drivers.”
