ONECO — Green County emergency responders aided with a fatal crash just south of the Wisconsin-Illinois border Sunday.
Deputies from the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office responded to Illinois 26 near West Winslow Road for a traffic crash just after 6:30 p.m. Officers identified five vehicles involved in the accident, one of which was a recreational vehicle. Two of the vehicles were on fire. Deputies were able to extinguish one of the fires with the help of bystanders.
There was a total of nine passengers involved in the crash. Three were treated and released at the scene. Four were injured and transported to local hospitals. Two were pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement is withholding the names of the injured and deceased until family members can be notified. Ill. 26 was closed at the time of the crash and reopened by 2 p.m. Monday.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Orangeville Fire Department, Cedarville Fire Department, McConnell Fire Department, Green County Fire and EMS, Leamons Ambulance, Star Ambulance, Rock City Fire Department/MABAS Division 17, REACT Helicopter, Illinois State Police, the Rockford Police Department, Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Green County Highway Department.
