NEW GLARUS - Two men were arrested following a search Wednesday morning of five locations throughout southern Wisconsin, in connection with the theft of numerous semi-automatic weapons in September.
Justin W. Wenger, 30, and William J. Wilke, 38, were arrested on probation holds. Further charges against the two are pending, New Glarus Police Chief Burt Boldebuck said Friday.
The coordinated searches took place in Stoughton, Monticello, New Glarus and the city of Madison, Boldebuck said.
The search warrants stem from an investigation into the theft of a safe in September in New Glarus, the chief said. The safe contained an undisclosed amount of cash, six semi-automatic pistols and six semi-automatic rifles.
The searches included law enforcement officials from the New Glarus, Monroe and Belleville police departments; the Department of Justice; and Dane County and Green County sheriff's departments. Officers gathered for a briefing Wednesday morning before executing the five simultaneous searches.
