DARLINGTON — Authorities have charged a local man with two additional felonies following a recent stabbing incident early on March 19 that sent one man to the hospital.
Higinio Tlaxcaltecatl, 33, of Darlington, was initially charged with first-degree attempted murder related to the early-morning incident but after a court appearance now faces additional felonies of burglary armed with a dangerous weapon and substantial battery, officials said.
According to police reports, the incident began just before 3:30 a.m., when they received a report of a disturbance in progress at a residential home on Main Street. Darlington Police Chief Jason King said the suspect and victim were acquaintances but did not live in the same home.
“This was not a random attack,” he said. “The victim was targeted by Higinio Tlaxcaltecatl, who was an acquaintance.”
As a result of the disturbance between the pair, one male victim was stabbed and transported to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County by Lafayette County EMS, where he was treated for wounds that police said were “serious but not life-threatening.” King said that victim is still recovering at home.
Tlaxcaltecatl remains in Lafayette County jail on a $50,000 bond, King said. He is scheduled for his next court appearance at 2:30 p.m. April 7, before Judge Duane M. Jorgenson. Attempted First Degree Intentional Homicide is a Class A felony and carries a maximum penalty of up to 60 years prison.
The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
