MONROE - Nina Binkley was working in her yard around 3 p.m. Friday when she heard a "pop" and saw the neighbor's tree fall to the ground.

"Thank God no one was hurt," Binkley said. "It popped out of the ground and fell over."

The tree is owned by Todd and Suzanne Meier, who have lived at the house, at 2505 Eighth St., for 14 years. Suzanne Meier walked around, inspected the damage and called her insurance company.

"I don't even know who (will remove the tree)," she said as she took pictures of the damage.

The roots, Binkley speculated, were weakened due to recent heavy rains and strong winds. Winds definitely were strong Friday afternoon, and there were mulitple reports of downed trees and branches in the area.

The tree fell on the yard and a garage, Meier said. There also are bushes and a storage shed in the yard where the tree fell. It was difficult to see if any damage was done to the shed because it was difficult to even see the shed for all the branches and leaves.

"I'm glad it didn't fall on the neighbor's fence," Meier said. "I guess we were lucky how it fell."

Had the tree fallen more toward the south, she pointed out, it would have landed on the two-story house and would have caused even more damage.

Binkley said it was fortunate the tree fell when it did.

"There weren't any kids playing in the yard," she said.

Meier's children, Vanessa, 9, and Aaron, 12, were stunned when they walked up to the yard and saw the damage. They, too, did a quick inspection of the damage.

"I think we're going to need a new basketball hoop," Aaron said.
