NORA, Ill. — Emergency cleanup crews were working from Thursday into Friday to clear wreckage, debris and spilled materials caused by a train derailment in the village of Nora, Illinois, about four miles southeast of Warren and 17 miles southwest of Monroe.
The Canadian National Rail and Jo Daviess County Emergency Management Agency were reported to be coordinating to clear damaged railcars and rail materials.
A total of 17 train cars derailed just after midnight Oct. 9 at the railroad crossing on North Stagecoach Trail near East Chestnut Street in Nora, according to the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.
The 82-car Canadian National train was reportedly carrying ethyl alcohol, though how much is unclear. Authorities said hazardous materials from the derailed cars was being removed and environmental monitoring is ongoing. Darlington and Grant County’s Fire Hazmat teams were paged to assist. Gratiot Fire was paged to Warren for a change of quarters.
The sheriff’s office evacuated residents within 1,000 feet of the incident, which affected about 100 people. By Thursday night, officials estimated families will be allowed to return Friday morning. Traffic area roads were blocked off all day Thursday to allow cleanup crews to work.
