MONROE - The Green County Sheriff's Department on Monday began participating in the "Click It or Ticket" national safety belt enforcement effort, which continues through Sunday, June 5.
A grant awarded by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Bureau of Traffic Safety allowed the department to schedule additional deputies to enforce traffic laws, with an emphasis on safety belt enforcement.
"The goal is not to write more traffic citations but to convince people to buckle up voluntarily, to reduce the number of preventable traffic fatalities," Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud said in a statement.
More than 300 Wisconsin law enforcement agencies also are expected to participate in this year's "Click It or Ticket" campaign.
