FREEPORT — The Illinois Office of Tourism released 2023 economic impact numbers for the State of Illinois recently as well as Stephenson County’s share of that growth. In 2023, visitors spent $52 million in Stephenson County — a 3.6 percent increase over 2022. This follows a nine percent increase in revenue from 2021 to 2022.

The direct tourism spending of $52 million exceeds all records in Stephenson County. The total revenue figures include spending for lodging, food and beverage, recreation, retail, and transit received from visitors who live 50 or more miles from Stephenson County. In addition, the tourism industry accounts for $11.4 million in direct labor income for residents.

“The Greater Freeport Partnership continues to tell the story of the amazing people and places that are found in Freeport and Stephenson County. Once potential visitors have seen the beauty of our area and experienced the hospitality of our communities, these numbers prove we have great things to offer,” said Brand Director Nicole Haas.

Illinois reached $47 billion in tourism revenue and welcomed over 112.4 million visitors. Hotel tax revenues for the state reached their highest level ever with a 4.5 percent increase over last year at $322 million.

“Illinois continues to make substantial investments in the travel and tourism sector, leading to an increase in visitors who are spending more time in our state and supporting local businesses,” said Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Director Kristin Richards. “We’re excited to continue this momentum and further enhance tourism in Illinois, building on this record-breaking success.”
