MONROE - The barn quilts of Green County will be highlighted in a bus tour on Green County Barn Quilt Day Saturday, July 14.
Barn Quilts are an outdoor art installation showcasing rural architecture. There are 117 barn quilt locations in Green County.
The bus tour will depart from Goetz Theatre, 1740 11th St., at 10 a.m., and will take participants to about 30 barn quilts - with stories along the way about the quilt patterns, farms and farm families.
The two-hour tour will be led by Lynn Lokken and Kris Winkler, co-chairs of the Green County Barn Quilt project. Special guest joining the group will be author Suzi Parron, author of "Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement."
Snacks will be provided on the tour, but participants are responsible for their own lunch.
In addition to the guided tour, there will be free quilt-related activities open to the public in Monticello. From 1 to 4 p.m., an outdoor quilt show, featuring antique and new quilts, will be held at Montesian Gardens. Quilter's Compass, a quilt shop, will host Parron for a reading and book-signing from 1 to 3 p.m. There will also be a textile exhibit featuring fabric quilts based on barn quilt patterns from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Dining Room, 209 Main St., Monticello. While in Monticello, visitors can have lunch or dinner at one of the food stands set up in the park for the Monticello Homecoming Festival taking place over the weekend.
Seating for the bus tour is limited and advance reservations are required. The cost is $10. Checks payable to Green County Barn Quilts can be sent to: UWEX, 2841 6th St., Monroe, WI 53566. There is no admission fee for the quilt shows or author talk.
