MONROE - Summer is upon us, and Green County communities are popping with color, music, food and festivities.

To help you start planning your summer fun, we've put together a list of some of the local events starting this Memorial Day weekend and running through mid-June. Choose your favorite destination, support your favorite organization or plan a day trip for your next free weekend. There is plenty to do for everyone in Green County.

May 24-26 - Community Music Fest, New Glarus Village Park. Music, beer, food, fun run, volleyball, and kids games. www.ngmusicfest.com

May 24-27 - Yesteryear's Weekend, Albany. Live music, carnival, concessions and chicken BBQ every days. Friday night street dance. Saturday flea market, pedal tractor pull, parade and fireworks. Monday Memorial Day services and parade. www.albany-chamber.org

June 2 - Fling into Summer, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Cadiz Springs State Recreation Area. Wisconsin State Parks Open House - no admission sticker and no fishing license required. Free games and activities; prizes. Learn about geocaching; enjoy park amenities, hiking trails, sandy beach and volleyball court. Proceeds from food stand go toward new playground equipment. June 8 - Old Time Cheesemaking, 9 a.m. to noon, Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory, National Historic Cheesemaking Center, 2108 6th Ave., Monroe. Local Green County Master Cheesemakers make a wheel of Swiss cheese the old-fashioned way - hand-stirred in a copper kettle.
