MONROE — To celebrate the 125th anniversary of its first publication, the Monroe Times invites the public to an open house from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Times office, 1065 4th Avenue West. Visitors can enjoy snacks, refreshments and memorabilia while interacting with current staff.
On Oct. 13, 1898, the first Monroe Evening Times publication was printed and distributed by founder Emery Odell. For the next 120 years, the publication published six days a week, and beginning in 2018 began twice-a-week distribution. During the 125 years in business, ownership of the Times changed hands multiple times. Morris Multimedia is the current owner of the publication.
Leading up to the anniversary, the Times has engaged with its audience in multiple ways, from daily historical questions to looks back at publications from decades ago. To further celebrate the relationship between the community and its newspaper, the Times will unveil a documentary about its history, produced locally. The documentary will be able to be viewed during the open house, as well as online on the Times website and through social media links.
“We are continually grateful for the support we receive from our readers and this community,” said Adam Krebs, managing editor. “This celebration is about our community as much as it is about our publication. Without their continued trust in us, we wouldn’t be able to tell the stories about the daily lives of the region.”
