Times earns honors at newspaper contest

MADISON - The Monroe Times won numerous awards for both news and advertising in the 2011 Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation's annual Better Newspaper Contest.

WNA's membership includes 32 daily and 190 weekly newspapers. The awards were announced at the WNA/AP annual convention in Madison Friday, Feb. 24.

News

The Times news staff won the following awards in its circulation category:

• Local editorials: Mary Jane Grenzow and Carl Hearing, second place

• Sports feature: Mark Nesbitt, second place for story "Weighing the 103 debate"

• All-around newspaper photography: Anthony Wahl, second place

• Special Section: Nesbitt and Adam Krebs, third place for Fall Sports Preview 2011

• Business coverage: Tere Dunlap, third place

• Environmental coverage: Tere Dunlap, third place for story "Turtles in project path"

• Spot new photo: Krebs, third place, for photo "One dead after robbery"

• Sports photo: Wahl, third place, for photo "DeForest ends Monroe's hopes"

• Reporting on local government: Tere Dunlap, third place

Advertising

Awards in the advertising division were:

• Best newspaper promotion: Sales team of Steve Allen, Tai Ruegsegger, Laura Hughes and Diane Albright, first place, for Boy Scouts' 100th Anniversary

• Best niche publication-out of paper: Sales team, first place, for Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industry Member Directory and Newcomer's Guide

• Online revenue builder: Hughes, first place, for Local Online Alternative to Yellow Pages

• Best niche publication-in paper: Sales team, second place, for Source

• Innovative online advertising: Hughes, second place, for Local Online Alternative to Yellow Pages

• Best niche publication-in paper: Sales team, third place, MTG 40th anniversary
