MONROE - Three stores in the strip mall on Monroe's west side, across from the Walmart Supercenter, are open for business and the owners are excited about their new locations.

J. Wise Smith of Memphis, Tenn. has built strip malls near other Walmarts in Memphis, Tenn.; Pella, Iowa; and Vermillion, S.D., over the past three years. He met with the Monroe Plan Commission in February 2009 to discuss plans for the new strip mall. Construction of The Marketplace at Monroe, a 31,200-square-foot mall, began in October and was recently completed.

The three stores located in the building, Maurice's, Radio Shack and Dollar Tree, completed their moves within the past couple of weeks.

Maurice's

Maurice's was located in the Honey Creek Mall. The new store has the same square footage as the former store, but manager Samantha Risseeuw said there are advantages to the new location.

"We're going to see more traffic," she said. "We're looking forward to (being here)."

The women's clothing store sells clothing from size 0 to size 24, Risseeuw said. The store also sells accessories.

It took a few days to move, but the move went smoothly, she said.

The store opened March 25.

Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Radio Shack

Radio Shack, the ninth-largest Radio Shack in the country, was located on West 8th Street in the former K-mart building. The store has about 4,700 square feet, according to owner Dave Gombosi.

"We're closer to the high velocity traffic," he said. As people drive toward Walmart, they might be interested to stop at his store, or other stores, in the mall, he added.

Radio Shack offers more than 22,000 products. It also has a theater room so people can see the quality of the home theater entertainment sold at the store.

Gombosi said the move was "the right thing to do."

The store opened March 10.

Store hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The hours begin April 1. Until then, the store is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree, a store that prides itself on the fact it sells everything for $1 or less, opened March 11.

"Our store is open seven days a week and offers a fast, fun and friendly shopping experience," spokesman Chelle Davis said. "We're proud to be a part of the Monroe community."

The store sells a little bit of everything including name-brand snacks, household cleaning supplies, paper products, hand sanitizers and more.

Store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

The Cash Store, Schmidt Clinic, Fantastic Sam's, The Shoe Department and ProCellular are expected to open within the next few weeks, Gombosi said. Anytime Fitness, a 24-hour fitness club, is expected to open later this year.
