NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus school district officially is looking for a superintendent now.
New Glarus Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Thompson agreed to a contract Wednesday with the Montgomery (Ala.) County Board of Education to be that district's next superintendent, according to the Montgomery Advertiser newspaper.
Thompson had accepted the Montgomery job offer July 2.
New Glarus school board President Mark Romich said the board plans to meet at 7:15 p.m. Monday to discuss a course of action for the district. He said the board will discuss the transition and begin to decide who in the district will assume the various duties of the superintendent until a replacement is found.
Thompson's decision to leave the New Glarus district was not unexpected. The district learned in June she was one of two finalists for the Montgomery superintendent position. Before that, she had been a finalist for similar positions in Janesville and Beloit.
Romich said last month the district could have building principals and the district business manager take on some of the superintendent responsibilities for a while if Thompson left the district.
Montgomery school board attorney Ramada nah Jones said Thompson accepted the board's contract with no changes, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.
Thompson will receive a base salary of $155,000 plus benefits and incentives. The contract also gives her three months to live rent-free in a home the school district bought for a former superintendent.
The contract becomes effective Aug. 1 and expires June 30, 2012.
Thompson, who had been with the New Glarus district since 2003, reportedly had a base salary in New Glarus of $125,000 that is worth about $175,000 with benefits.
The Montgomery school system has nearly 4,000 employees and 32,000 students.
