Thompson tops Forum's lineup

MONROE - Three influential men will come together for the Monroe Sesquicentennial Forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Monroe Arts Center (MAC).

Former Health and Human Services Secretary and four-term Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, Swiss Colony President John Baumann and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Chancellor Richard Telfer will participate in the forum at MAC's Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall. A champagne reception will immediately follow downstairs in the Frehner Gallery.

Thompson will address the status and future of health care. Baumann will speak to the challenges of operating a major corporation in a small community and the need to meet those challenges for the viability of small communities. Telfer will talk about the future of education.

Thompson is a partner at the law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and chairman and the senior advisor to the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions. He also is president of Logistics Health Incorporated.

At Deloitte and Akin Gump, Thompson is building on his efforts as HHS secretary and governor to develop innovative solutions to the health care challenges facing American families, businesses, communities, states and the nation. He also serves on several boards, is the chairman of AGA Medical Corporation, and is one of the nation's leading advocates for health and welfare.

Baumann has been president of The Swiss Colony since May 1996. He first joined the company in 1985 as manager of New Customer Development. He was promoted to director of marketing in 1987, president of Midnight Velvet in 1988, vice president of strategic marketing in 1989, and senior vice president of strategic planning in 1995.

In addition to his role as president of The Swiss Colony, Baumann serves are president of the organization's data center, SCDC, and the product line Tender Filet. He is a civic leader and the champion of several worthy endeavors.

Telfer is the 15th chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He served as interim chancellor from May 2007 until June 2008, when he received his current appointment.

Telfer, the chief executive officer of the university, guided UW-Whitewater's efforts to implement a campus-wide strategic plan. In his 20-year tenure at UW-Whitewater, Dr. Telfer has served as provost and vice chancellor of Academic Affairs, associate vice chancellor of Academic Affairs, assistant dean of graduate studies, and chair of the Department of curriculum and instruction. He has a faculty appointment as professor of curriculum and instruction.
