MONROE - The city will be having its annual Spring Cleanup Days beginning April 28. This is for city residents only.

Collection for residents north of and including 13th Street will be the week of April 28. Residents south of 13th Street will have items picked up the week of May 5.

Cleanup Day items must be on the terrace by 7 a.m. the Monday of the week of pick-up. Not everything will be picked up Monday, but it saves the crew time if they do not have to return to an area after they have been through it once. Crews are assigned to pick up specific items and may leave items they have not been assigned to pick up.

The city will haul away articles not picked up during regular garbage pick-up. All articles must be sorted and arranged on the terrace in an orderly manner. All discarded household items including furniture, sinks, windows and bicycles, should be sorted from regular garbage and recyclables. Please do not park vehicles in front of the piles.

Items with freon, which include refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners must be paid for in advance. Stickers will be given for items upon payment. The stickers are $15 and should be placed on the item before setting them on the terrace.

Tires can be disposed for $5 per tire. Tires must be paid for in advance. If they do not have stickers on them, they will be left.

Items that will not be picked up are: concrete, roots, rock, large quantities of lumber, dirt, sod, hazardous materials or paint cans that are not emptied and dry.

Large amounts of brush and shrubbery cut down by the property owner only will be picked up with special equipment. All brush should be stacked with cut ends facing one direction. Items should not be placed near fire hydrants, utility poles, electrical boxes, roadways, or block sidewalks.

Recyclable items should be placed in clear blue bags and placed on the terrace on your regular garbage pick-up day.

Any items placed on the terrace of commercial properties and businesses will not be picked up.

Residents are asked to not allow other people to place items on their terrace. Anyone illegally placing items on the terrace should be reported to the police department at 329-2400.

For more information, call the Monroe Streets and Sanitation Dept. at 329-2490 between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
